David Rombach grew up in Karlsruhe (Germany) in 1986 and studied chemistry at LMU Munich and KIT Karlsruhe. After scientific adventures in fluorine chemistry with Tobias Ritter (Harvard University) and the synthesis of GluK2 antagonists with Lennart Bunch (University of Copenhagen), he focused on the synthesis and incorporation of photoswitches into DNA during his diploma thesis (Diplom, 2015). Inspired by photochemistry and organofluorine chemistry, he joined Hans-Achim Wagenknecht's group to work on photoredoxic catalytic activation of SF6 for pentafluorosulfanylation chemistry during his PhD (2018). In 2019, he joined Antonio Togni's group at ETH Zurich as a postdoctoral fellow to continue his work on hypervalent sulfur, iodine compounds and trifluoroacetylation chemistry. In 2020, he started his independent research (SNSF Spark) in the group of Erick M. Carreira at ETH Zurich to study novel SF5-containing molecules. In July 2023, David started as a group leader at the University of Zurich (SNSF Ambizione).

Nil was born in Izmir, Turkey and has moved to Toronto, Canada in 2021 where she received my bachelor's degree in the Chemistry Specialist program at the University of Toronto. She completed her bachelor's thesis on investigating the activity of Phosphino-Phosphenium Cations (PPCs) in maingroup chemistry under Prof. Douglas Stephan. She was interested in expanding her studies from phosphorus to fluorine chemistry after she got fascinated by the reactivity of SF5-containing compounds upon reading about the group's work. In my free time I enjoy cooking, reading about quantum mechanics, listening to music and playing instruments.

Richard grew up in Waldshut (Germany), close to the Swiss border. After finishing his apprenticeship as a chemical lab technician in 2021 he worked in process chemistry for one year. Then in 2022 he started his bachelor’s degree in chemistry at the UZH. During a short internship in our group in the summer of 2024 he became interested in the chemistry of the SF5 group. In February 2025 he returned for his Bachelor's research to continue exploration of the chemical space of SF5 compounds as a Research Asisstant. In his free time Richard enjoys cooking and going out for a walk.

Abril was born in Oaxaca de Juárez, Mexico, where she spent 16 years before moving to Switzerland. She started her apprenticeship as a lab technician in 2022 and completed it in 2025. She took a year off to prepare for the study of biomedical analysis in 2026, during this year, she got in touch with David and discovered the beauty of the chemistry of the SF5 group. In her free time, she enjoys working out and hanging out with her friends. Abril will start to work with us in November 2025 as a lab technician.

Enikő was born and raised in Hungary and obtained her BSc, MSc, and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pannonia. Her research focused on catalysis and on the synthesis and modification of heterocyclic compounds. Before joining the Rombach Group, she worked in industry as a research chemist, designing and synthesizing early-stage drug candidates. She moved to Switzerland in 2025 and is now a Postdoctoral Researcher in the Rombach Group, exploring new strategies for the synthesis of SF₅-containing molecules. In her free time, she enjoys photography, dancing, and traveling.

Lujie was born and grew up in Jiangsu Province, China. In 2019, he moved to University of Cambridge to conduct his Bachelor’s and Master’s study. He joined Prof. Matthew Gaunt’s group to carry out his master’s project on multicomponent alkene azido-heteroarylation reactions. In 2024, he moved to Zurich and joined the Rombach group as a PhD student. Apart from chemistry, Lujie enjoys photographyand music.
